Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates your previous formal and informal learning, skills, and experiences to determine if they meet the requirements of a qualification.

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer is a process that recognises previous formal study equivalent to units within your chosen qualification. This means you can receive credit for completed units without needing to undertake additional learning or assessment for those units.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates your previous formal and informal learning, skills, and experiences to determine if they meet the requirements of a qualification.

Please note that RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is not a simple sign-off process. Students must submit comprehensive evidence that goes beyond just a supervisor’s letter. To be eligible for RPL, students must meet all the unit of competency requirements as listed on Training.gov.au. This includes:

  • You will be required to answer knowledge questions, explain work processes, and provide supporting evidence.
  • Evidence may include workplace documents, videos, photo’s supervisor reports, records of non-formal learning, statements of attainment, and qualification certificates (if relevant).
  • You will be asked to provide a third-party (workplace employer and/or supervisor) who can verify your experience.
  • Depending on the evidence you provide, you may also need to participate in observation demonstrations, projects, or competency conversations as part of the assessment.

Yes, in addition to a non-refundable application fee, an extra fee per unit is charged for RPL, as it involves a detailed assessment beyond the standard course fee. Click here to view additional fees.

Step 1:

  • Express your interest in Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an assessment pathway by contacting the Medical Administration office on 1300 887 082 or email: info@medtrain.com.au.
  • You will be sent the RPL Student Self-Assessment Tool to compare your skills and experience against the required criteria of the unit/s.
  • Submit your completed self-assessment for review.
  • If RPL is not suitable, we will guide you on alternative training options.
  • If RPL is suitable, we will arrange a phone or Zoom meeting to explain the process before moving to Step 2.

Step 2:

  • You will receive an invoice for the RPL planning meeting and any additional unit fees.
  • Once payment is received, you will be provided with the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Student Evidence Form.
  • You will need to collect and record your evidence of prior learning and experience. This includes:
    • Work samples, qualifications, and relevant documents.
    • An employer/supervisor third-party report, which must be completed to verify your work experience.
  • Your evidence portfolio must be carefully compiled and submitted along with the completed form for assessment.

Step 3:

  • Submit your completed evidence form.
  • Your RPL Assessor will review and map your evidence to the required competencies.
  • Your employer or supervisor will be contacted to verify the information in the third-party report.
  • We will schedule a phone or Zoom meeting to review your evidence.
  • Attend your RPL interview.
  • The assessor will make an assessment decision based on your evidence.

Step 4:

  • You will be informed of the result of your RPL application.
  • If unsuccessful:
    • You may submit additional evidence if needed.
    • If further study is required, you will be advised on suitable training options.
  • You will be informed about the appeals process if you wish to challenge the decision.
  • If successful:
    • Your unit(s) will be recorded as RPL granted in our student management system.

If you believe that an RPL decision is incorrect or unfair, you have the right to appeal. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the RTO Director within 20 business days of receiving the assessment decision. The RTO Director will review and respond to your appeal.

If you remain dissatisfied after the internal appeal, you may escalate your appeal to an external body, such as:

  • The Queensland Ombudsman
  • Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA)
  • Queensland Department of Education and Training (for apprentices/trainees)

Only one external appeal decision is allowed. MAT will consider and act on the outcome of the external appeal as required.

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer is a process that recognises previous formal study equivalent to units within your chosen qualification. This means you can receive credit for completed units without needing to undertake additional learning or assessment for those units.

Both current and prospective students are eligible to apply for credit transfer if:

  • The units are current and equivalent as listed in the National Register
  • The units are included within the qualification for which you are enrolled or applying

Please note that MAT is not required to issue a qualification or statement of attainment solely through recognition of units or modules completed at another RTO.

Credit transfers are a recognition process and do not incur any fees.

To apply for credit transfer, complete a Credit Transfer Application Form.
Along with the form, include supporting documents such as your qualification certificates, Record of Results, statements of attainment, graduation statements, or a USI transcript.

Submitting your application before the start of your study is recommended.

The credit transfer application can be made by:

  1. Uploading the documents during the enrolment process.
  2. Sending copies via email to info@medtrain.com.au .

MAT is required to verify that any transcripts, Statements of Attainment, or Certificates are issued by a legitimate RTO. This process depends on the response time of the issuing RTO. Once verification is complete, MAT will process your credit transfer request within 3-5 business days.

After verification is completed, MAT will inform you in writing of the credit transfer decision as soon as possible.

If you believe that a credit transfer decision is incorrect or unfair, you have the right to appeal.
