The role of standard and additional precautions in reducing the spread of infections.
Learn the key obligations of infection prevention and control legislation, standards and guidelines.
Acquire skills in monitoring and evaluating infection control work processes, maintaining clean and contaminated zones, managing exposures and much more.

Course Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

To ensure this, it is necessary for students to have a strong grasp of computer basics and to meet the appropriate proficiency levels in reading, writing, oral communication, and numeracy as outlined in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) for their chosen course. COURSE SUBJECTS
HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
This unit covers a broad range of topics to enable participants to respond confidently to
infection hazards they may encounter while carrying out their daily duties. In this unit, you’ll
learn the following:
- Standard infection prevention and control precautions such as;
- Hand hygiene practices
- Using Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
- Sharps
- Linen
- Waste management.
- Identifying when additional safeguards are required, including droplet and airborne precautions
- Maintaining clean and contaminated zones
- Managing exposures
- Relevant legislation, standards and guidelines
- Identifying infection hazards in the workplace and assessing their associated risks
HLTINF007 – Implement and monitor infection prevention and control standards, policies and procedures
This unit covers information about infection prevention and control procedures and how to integrate those procedures into work practices and monitor workplace performance.
In this unit, you’ll learn how to:
- Effectively implement infection prevention policies and procedures
- Provide instruction about infection prevention and control standards
- Investigate and report infectious risks and events
- Monitor infection prevention and control work practice
COURSE ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
Using different assessment methods allows us to assess different skills. During this course trainers may use any or all of the following:
Question-based assessments – Written response questions
Product-based assessment – For example, completing a simple risk assessment and creating a measles outbreak response procedure
Direct observation – MAT believes you can benefit from role-playing activities throughout your studies as they are fun, interactive and allow you to collaborate with other participants.
Trainers will evaluate your practical skills as you engage in actual workplace tasks or simulated role-play activities (video evidence required).
All assessment tasks are supported with comprehensive instructions and guidance.
COURSE DURATION
All students are allocated 4 weeks (full-time) or 8 weeks (part-time) to complete their Infection Training Course.
However, as it is self-paced learning, you can complete your course in much less time.
As a general guide, we recommend a commitment of 6-8 hours per week for part-time study and 10-20 hours per week for full-time study.
COURSE EQUIPMENT
This course is delivered through a convenient distance-based online format, allowing students to access our fully accredited course material from any location at any time.
You will need a desktop computer or laptop, an internet connection, an up-to-date browser (such as Internet Explorer 8+, Chrome, or Firefox), functional audio (microphone), and a camera or webcam to participate in the online course.
Furthermore, students should have access to suitable facilities and equipment to demonstrate the following skills effectively:
- Proper hand hygiene
- Appropriate disposal of clinical and general waste
- Correct usage of personal protective equipment (including gloves, gown, mask, and
eye protection) - Thorough cleaning of medical or client care equipment as well as work areas
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
You can apply for RPL and Credit Transfers at the time of enrolment or during the course.
