HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control

This course is designed for administrators and non-medical staff who need to understand infection control in day-to-day roles. You’ll learn:

  • How infections develop and spread
  • The chain of infection and how to break it
  • Hand hygiene and personal hygiene standards
  • Safe use of PPE, cleaning, waste, and linen procedures
  • Recognising and responding to infection risks in everyday tasks

How You’ll Be Assessed
Throughout the course, you will complete a range of activities designed to help you demonstrate your knowledge and practical skills related to infection prevention and control in healthcare settings. These tasks reflect situations commonly encountered in healthcare workplaces.

Knowledge Questions
You will complete a range of questions designed to check your understanding of the topics covered in the unit. These may include short written answers, multiple-choice questions and responses to workplace scenarios.

Practical Tasks
Some activities involve completing practical tasks that demonstrate how infection prevention and control procedures are applied in healthcare settings. These tasks may include identifying infection risks and demonstrating correct procedures such as hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning practices, and safe handling of contaminated materials or waste.

Video Demonstrations and Role Plays
At certain points in the course, you will be asked to record short videos demonstrating infection control procedures or take part in role play scenarios. These activities allow you to demonstrate how infection prevention and control procedures are applied and how you would respond in common workplace situations.

Role plays can be completed in one of two ways:

  • With a MAT assessor during a scheduled online session, or
  • By recording and uploading your role play through the Learning Management System (LMS).

If you choose to record the role play yourself, you will need another person over 18 to assist by acting as a patient or colleague. This can be a friend or family member – no qualifications are required.

Videos can be recorded using your computer, tablet or phone and uploaded directly through the LMS.

Additional Items Required for Assessment
To complete the practical activities, you will need access to the following items:

  • Basic PPE items for demonstration, including:
    • 2 pairs of disposable rubber gloves (well-fitted to your hands)
    • 1 disposable surgical face mask
    • 1 white or black bin liner

These items are not supplied by MAT and can be purchased from most supermarkets or pharmacies.

Total Cost: $295
(Includes a non-refundable $50 enrolment fee)
